Awards and Nominations

Awards

The club has a formal process for recognizing outstanding service to the club.   This process comprises two awards:  the Douglass Award for outstanding contribution to the club and the Leiser Award which recognizes significant literary contribution.  These awards are determined by a vote of the Executive Committee of the Board, to include the Magazine Editor for the Leiser Award.

Nominations

Nominations are solicited from the membership and may be submitted here. In making a nomination please provide your name and email address, identify the person(s) nominated, the award for which the person(s) is nominated, and a brief statement of reasons supporting the nomination.

Douglass Award

Club members from the very beginning, Dick and LaDonna Douglass were instrumental in helping founder, Bernie Huston, get the club organized and off to a running start.  Upon Bernie’s retirement in 1994, LaDonna assumed the role of Treasurer, a position she held through 1998 when ill health forced her resignation.  Reacting to concerns about how the Club would operate in the future. Dick Douglass, Ron Hoffman, and another attorney drafted a set of By-Laws which would formalize the Club’s structure and set expectations in the years to come. The draft was presented to the membership and approved in 1995. In addition, Dick and LaDonna volunteered to investigate tax-exempt status for the Club.  Thanks to their diligent work, the IRS recognized the NSCC as a non-profit organization in early 1997.

In 1999, the Board created the Ladonna Douglass award for deserving Club members who, like LaDonna, gave freely of their time and energy working long and hard on the club's behalf. Dick accepted the first award posthumously on her behalf.  In 2005, a decision was made at the Las Vegas conference to change the name of the award to “The Douglass Award” in recognition of their joint service to the club.  This award may be granted to a recipient once in a lifetime.

Leiser Award

curt and lynne From the club’s earliest years, Curt and Lynne were active in Club governance with Lynne serving as secretary from 1994-1998 and Curt as Vice-President and President from 1997-1998.  More than anything else, however, Curt and Lynne are remembered for their commanding roles in publishing our Newsletter which Curt took over in 1994 and which they jointly ran until 2006.  Prolific contributors, their informative articles became a foundational resource for all members. He was the Editor and she the Reviewer- proof reader. They fashioned a work of art and learning which is now universally cited as a key reason for being in the Club.  During Curt’s tenure, the publication evolved from a black and white newsletter to a magazine with multiple color pages.

In 2012, the board created the Curt Leiser Award for Outstanding Magazine Article to honor Curt’s memory and contributions to the club.  In 2016, the award was renamed the Leiser award to honor both Curt and his wife, Lynne, whose death shortly before the 25th Anniversary Conference which she chaired was a tragic loss to the club.  The board also decided to broaden the award to include literary contributions in addition to those published in the magazine.  This award may be granted to a recipient more than once, but not in consecutive years.
